BRINDLE

“Dramatic, sexy, blistering, handclap rock.”
Hotpress Magazine

WHEN BRINDLE first walked onto the stage in 1999, no one – not even the band – expected they would evolve into the hard hitting outfit of today.

Back then, Brindle’s less-is-more approach saw the songs driven by just an acoustic guitar and Deb Suckling’s whirlwind of a voice… but slowly, Brindle began to change.

Looking to expand their horizons and test the waters of completely different musical style, the band gradually began drifting away from their acoustic roots and embraced a powerful, dynamic new direction. Since then, the band has re-invented itself several times, constantly experimenting with different styles and approaches to songwriting. That attitude has seen Brindle grow into a band more interested in pushing their own boundaries, than jumping on the latest musical bandwagon.

Drawing on influences ranging from Patti Smith to Sonic Youth, The Pixies and …The Trail of Dead, the Brindle sound is passionate and playful, powerful and intense…and never predictable.

Over the past seven years, the Brisbane quartet has independently released three EPs (Brindle, Stories and Classification), two singles (Catch/Candles and Fight You For It) and their debut album, It Takes An Army.

Each release has earned Brindle national airplay on the Triple J Network, ongoing support from community radio, and rave reviews from music press around the country. What’s more, the band has built a strong following up and down the east coast thanks to regular tours, consistent airplay and slots at major festivals including The Big Day Out.

Brindle have been locked down in the studio for the past four months working on the follow up to their debut album It Takes An Army which was released in 2006 to critical acclaim both in Australia and internationally.

2006 saw the band tour in Canada and North America and secure releases in the UK and a publishing deal in the US and receive airplay on dozens of college stations across Canada and the US.

The so new it doesn’t have a name yet sophomore album is slated for release worldwide in October through their own digital label SugarRush Records and physically in Australia through SugarRush/MM/SonyBMG. The new album sees the band further explore the high impact noise rock ethic that drives their live show.

The first single from the new album Dinosaur will hit airwaves September 7, 2007.

WHAT THE CRITICS HAVE TO SAY:
“Driven by the twin engines of Walker's ‘rolling rhythms’ and Suckling's conflicted carnal wails, the bracing four-piece grits its collective teeth to summarily stare down the "politics in the air," the lies everywhere, both big and small, with white-knuckled ferocity. It Takes an Army is a strident set of sweetened, swelling rock gut-churners akin to Tanya Donnelly's Belly, albeit tighter, tougher and far more visceral, sometimes to the point of uneasiness.”
Ottawa Express

“Brisbane four-piece Brindle deliver a stunning debut album that makes the long wait evaporate. A cohesive, consistent longplayer, it finds Brindle honing their craft and broad influences into a blend of intense rock without ever forgoing a melodic hook.”
4/5 Time Off Magazine

“Deb Suckling has a powerful voice reminiscent of PJ Harvey or Alison Mossheart from The Kills and the music varies from standard guitar pop to delightfully dark rock music.”

BRINDLE IS…
Simon Walker: drums, percussion and fitness co-ordinator Sime's early inspirations in music came from, among others, the ground breaking sounds of Funkadelic, The Birthday Party, The Butthole Surfers, World Domination Enterprises, and...Tom Jones. These days it's the likes of Squarepusher, PJ Harvey, or Muse that get him excited. He loves reality, though he's not averse to having it altered now and again. Sime's been in many bands inc 90's goth/cabaret outfits Krank and Spank. His ultimate band: bass, Bootsy Collins; guitar, Paul Leary (Buttholes) and Hendrix; drums, Squarepusher and Buddy Rich; vocals, Tom Jones.

Deb Suckling: guitar, vox, organizational genius Deb can't live without The Reindeer Section, Bluebottle Kiss, Seafood, red wine and anything deep-fried. Early musical influences include pretty much anything from the eighties (except maybe Warrant), The Smashing Pumpkins and Chrissie Hynde. She also has a fixation with post-packs, she can't go a week without sending off at least two or three hundred stuffed with all sorts of goodies.

Ben Moore: bass and the construction of nifty things out of plastic Ben has the coolest job in the world – he’s an architectural model maker. You know those nifty little models of “exciting new residential concepts” you see at real estate agents of…he makes them. That said, he doesn’t have a God complex. He also plays in Canvas, has a ridiculous number of bass pedals and makes remarkably good beer.

Craig Spann: guitar, pithy remarks Craig's desert island record collection (well, this week's anyway) would include anything by: At the Drive In, PJ Harvey, Radiohead, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Smashing Pumpkins, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Sleater-Kinney and …Trail of Dead. Brindle is Craig's first band and he is committed to never playing barre chords. He also thinks the toasted sandwich maker was the greatest invention of all time.

BRINDLE
“I WILL STAND ON ALL FOURS. I WILL BATHE YOU IN NOISE.”

Surely the time has come for someone to be angry. Not angry in the pouty haircut sort of way. Angry in the pull no punches, spit out what you want to say, and leave nothing behind way.

And that’s exactly where we find BRINDLE circa late 2007. They’ve toyed with it before, but with new single DINOSAUR the Brisbane four-piece has let it all go.

DINOSAUR is a three minute blast of energy loaded with enough noise to stop you in your tracks and a message that hits you between the eyes. It’s a song about now. It’s a song about change. It’s a song that captures a band interested in nothing other than being themselves.

More importantly for the band, it’s a song that captures the leave it on the stage assault of the live show they’ve taken around the country and abroad.

Produced by the band and engineered across a number of Brisbane studios, Brindle has released DINOSAUR to offer a taste of their next long-player due out early next year.

The record will be the follow-up to Brindle’s debut album It Takes an Army and sees the band yet again stretching themselves to find a newer, bigger sound.

DINOSAUR will be a strictly digital release available globally through SugarRush Digital in Oct 2007.
